Ķemeri NP (38,165 ha) is a very diverse territory, a place where big geological structures come together. The present Piejūras lowland borders several inland dunes (Krāču kalni, Zaļā kāpa) – former shores of the ancient Littorina Sea. Thousands of years ago the land raised and the sea level decreased – which is how the coastal lagoon lakes with many relic salt water plants were created (Lakes Kaņieris, Dūņieris, Sloka). In NW of ĶNP, in the Milzkalne area, hills and the 30m deep Lake Valgums were formed by the ice sheets. In the middle of vast forests, the Lielais Ķemeru tīrelis, Raganu and Zaļais raised bogs are hidden. Bogs are based on the dolomite rocks, and the interaction between them creates hydrogen sulphide mineral water that comes to the surface around Ķemeri. This has been the basis for the spa for the last few hundred years. Human activity has affected this area relatively little – mainly in the coastal fishing villages and agricultural lands around Slampe. Therefore, ĶNP is home to many plant and animal species that are rare and protected both in Latvia and Europe.
