Beaver-watching in Ķemeri NP

The beaver is the biggest rodent in Latvia, and the majority of people has seen the signs of their activities or at least has heard of them. Wet forests of Ķemeri NP with countless drainage ditches are the ideal environment for beavers who are very abundant here – about 1000 beavers live almost undisturbed here. If you want to see some trees cut or stripped bare of their bark by beavers, go to the forest in the vicinity of a ditch or a river. A beaver dam will be somewhere nearby and perhaps its its den or a hut as well, which looks like a huge pile of sticks. The beaver is a very shy animal and it is difficult to catch a glimpse of it. Usually only a loud ‘plop’ is the evidence of its presence. The sound is produced by the beaver by hitting the water by its tail, which means that he has seen you first. The best time to go beaver watching is at dawn and dusk, and the best location is Lake Liliju at the Krāču kalni dunes. After meeting a beaver feel free to take home its souvenirs – peeled sticks.
